La carrera de Rick ha seguido dos corrientes principales: Al principio su música es marcadísima por el sonido YES y por la grandeza del progresivo sinfónico, y en su segunda ha hecho música ambiental, atmosférica, de fondo y cristiana. Estas etapas no son cronológicas, es decir, no se trata de la primera y la segunda mitad, su música la hace como se sienta en el momento y ya. Lo que resulta innegable, es que su capacidad para interpretar en los teclados es única, enérgica, grandiosa, que cumple con su cometido en cualquier caso que esté interpretando: te puede relajar o te puede llenar de euforia, te puede cautivar o provocar náuseas. También dependerá de tu estado de ánimo o de tu humor actual. Otro dato interesante en la carrera musical de WAKEMAN, es su participación como músico de sesión para gente como Cat STEVENS o MAGNA CARTA, a veces sin recibir el crédito como teclista de sesión.
